Super Collider
Super Collider
Loaded 3/99 [cat#??]
One of the better singles of 1998 was “Darn Cold Way O Lovin’” from the
UK’s Super Collider duo. After hearing the housed up remix from DJ
Harvey, you’d be forgiven for thinking this was yet another in a long
line of British chart wannabees. Super Collider, however,
is actually Cristian Vogel and Jamie Lidell, two of electronic music’s
damn-them-all-and-I’ll-do-what-I-want bunch. And it’s Lidell who’s
providing the pipework here. Promos of the Super Collider full length
have been doing the rounds since last September, and Loaded are now set
to drop this bomb in late March. Simply put, Vogel and Lidell’s Super
Collider is going to blow up the notions that innovative electronics
can’t be paired with listenable vocals, and vice versa. Picture “Hot
Thing” and the Prince of 1987, Wax Trax!’s Pig from the same period, and
generous helpings of downtempo machine funk from Vogel paired with
Lidell’s often manipulated vocals—you’re half way there. Single number
two is a double hit of “It Won’t Be Long” (floor scraping bass with
floating highs) and “Take Me Home” (Sly Stone meets SC’s 4/4). Already
one of the best albums of 1999. --Andrew Duke
