Electronics Report for November 1997 (compiled October 1, 1997)
by Andrew Duke

DJ Vadim continues with his audio research into minimal hip hop on his Jazz Fudge label. "A New Rap Language" (as Andre Gurov) features seven tracks and pairings with DJ Handsdown, producer Daniel Pemberton, and the rap stylings of Jupiter Jam and J.A.E. AJ Kwame and Joe 2000 (aka Joe 2 Grand) are the Runaways. Their mostly instrumental hip hop 2 X 12" "Classic Tales" [Ultimate Dilemma/London] has scratching that is dead on, but drags a bit lengthwise. Kudos for pairing head nodding beats with classical musicians on a few cuts, though.

Toxic 220 having been touring the world as part of the infamous Spiral Tribe and venture outside their Network 23 label to lay down some rugged drum n bass for Brooklyn's Sugar Spliff on the "Subliminal Sewage" 12", while in a jazzy vein worth checking is the "Playground" EP [F Communications/Paris] from Alexkid.

Excellent too are the continuing innovations of the Swedish Dot label. Stockholm's Magnus Astrom records as Friend and his "Sauna Sessions" explores the possibilities with polyrhythms. You get four tracks in all, with a remix of "Kites Are Nice" from Dorado's Outside (with some help from Jamie "Kid Loops" Lexton on the board).

David Shewey has been receiving such an excellent response to the inventive Californian electro sounds of Live Better Electrically's "Funky Future" [Shewey Trax] that he's planning a November rerelease. LBE's "Music From A Motion Picture" EP is planned for year's end.

Montreal's Interchill have licensed a track originally released on the UK's Universal Egg in 1995 and now present nimble footed electronic revamps of Sounds From The Ground's "Drawn To The Woman" that will continue the label's good name. Before the end of year you can expect a four track "Magnetic Blue" EP featuring dub and d n b which will serve as a taster for the same-titled double CD to be released in January. After that Adham Shaikh will be unleashing a yet to be titled album. Watch out for the upcoming Beta Tour with Interchill, Ignition/Pik n Mix, Ntone, and Post Contemporary DJs. PC's Alexander Addicus and Rupert J Lloyd are currently working on their next album, "Floating In Shallow Water", for a late 1998 release.
